Adventure X Fest (AXF) is an adventure base camp festival celebrating great music and outdoor vibes at the Jackson River Sports Complex in Covington VA surrounding by the beautiful Alleghany Highlands.

HOW IT WORKS

Step 1. Buy your AXF pass and we’ll mail you a Limited Edition AXF Map so you can start planning. AXF Camper Passes are sold per vehicle and include all passengers.

Step 2. Arrive at AXF Friday when the gates open, setup camp, meet fellow adventurers, visit vendors and enjoy music from Chad Nickell and the Loose Change. If you purchased an AXF Unlimited Training Pass, you can attend up to three (3) classes Friday afternoon.

Step 3. Wake up early Saturday morning and hit the road. Leave? Yes, we want you to explore everything there is to see in the forests that surround the Alleghany Highlands. That’s why we made you a map!

Step 4. Its time to celebrate! Return to AXF on Saturday around 5:00PM for food, brews and live performances by The Vegabonds and the Jared Stout Band.

AXF CAMPER PASS All registered AXF Camper Pass holders can enter the gates at the event starting Friday, September 10 at 13:00. Check-in with our volunteer staff upon arrival and choose from one of 125 marked campsites. You’ll be camping on the grounds at AXF for two fun evenings and we plan on having more vendors on site this year! Vendor lists will be updated as the register. Your AXF Camper Pass includes a paper AXF Trail Map, AXF patch, a camping permit/sticker and a host of other brochures and information about the area. Passes are issued per vehicle and include all passengers.

Dean Shirley (East Coast Overland Adventures, John Fury (Fury Training Concepts) and Erich Ross (REDARC Electronics) will be offering courses in communications, navigation, first aid and power management. Add an AXF Training Pass to your cart now and occupy your Friday afternoon with first class instruction at Adventure X Fest. NOTE: The AXF Training Pass alone does not give you access to AXF on-site camping. AXF Camper Passes must be in addition to the AXF Camper Pass.

FAQ

What is an “adventure basecamp event?” AXF is intended to be your weekend entertainment when you’re done exploring each day. Services, such as food, beverage, rentals and music will be limited during the day and resume each afternoon at 16:00.

How can I share my AXF experience? Find AXF on Instagram at @adventurexfest and tag us with #advxfest and #uniquelyalleghany when you’re out on the trail.

Can I pick my campsite? Yes. Camping is first come first serve. All camping options are level at the venue. We have 3 acres of grass camping (primary) plus an additional acre of gravel (overflow) camping. Electrical hookups are not available on location yet.

What sort of things can we plan on doing at the event? During the day, we hope nobody stays because everyone will be out exploring! Here’s a few options for you to enjoy during your weekend at AXF.

  • Option 1: Travel the Alleghany-Craig Overland Route. Pack up the truck and let’s log some miles! We’ve got over 230 miles of gravel, dirt and backroads mapped for you to explore in your adventure mobile. Your AXF Map ships before you arrive so you can start planning your weekend.

  • Option 2: Paddle Lake Moomaw or the Jackson River. Whether you’re a flatwater paddler or you’re willing to test your skills on some mild rapids, Lake Moomaw and the Jackson River are great options for beating the heat. Visit Alleghany Outdoors and start planning your adventure now.

  • Option 3: Hike and Mountain Bike at Douthat State Park. Over 43 miles of trails await your feet or pedals at Douthat State Park. Spend a day hiking and biking to the backcountry shelters and enjoying the amenities of Blue Ridge Outdoors 2020 Best State Park. Learn more at Douthat State Park.

  • Option 4: Bike the Jackson River Scenic Trail. Make it a scenic and peaceful day walking or biking the 14 mile Jackson River Scenic Trail. Visit Alleghany Outdoors to start planning your adventure now.

NEW!!! Is there training at the event? Yes, we have training this year! From 14:00-17:30 we'll be offering three periods of 1 hr. classes with three classes to choose from in each period. That means you can pick three seperate classes Friday afternoon and learn about comms, navigation, first aid and power management all for only $10! Simply add an AXF Unlimited Training Pass to your cart before checkout.

Are there any group rides? The staff at AXF will be out exploring during the event and we don’t have any pre-planned private group rides. This is how these events work - you show up, camp, meet new adventurers and plan your excursion for the next day OR just get out and explore on your own!

What kind of food and beverages will be available? Food trucks and/or vending will be present for dinner and breakfast options. Water, soda and adult beverages will be available for purchase.

Are there bathrooms on site? Yes. Port-a-johns and established bathhouses are available on location at the event.

Are fires permitted? No wood fires are permitted. Only contained and elevated gas fired camp cooking stoves are allowed.

Are pets allowed? Yes. You assume all responsibility for your pet and must keep it on a leash at all times.

Will there be security services on site? Yes. Security guards will be patrolling the campground and concert area during the event. Event lighting will remain on until 23:00 each evening.

Is there cellular service at the event? Yes. 4G LTE services are available on site.

What about rain? This event is rain or shine. We will welcome your event pop tents in the lawn area should weather threaten music performances.

Do I have to camp at AXF? No. A pass is required for camping only. If you choose not to camp, you are permitted to visit daily.

What is the AXF Trail Map? The trail map provided with your AXF Camper/Volunteer Pass is a 3’x2’ paper topo map with overland tracks mapped by Mountain State Overland. The map includes road surface details, natural landmarks, historical sites, hiking destinations, top pick dinning options and more. No map upgrades to Tyvek are available this year.

Can I get a refund? AXF Camper Passes are 50% refundable up to 90 days before the event. AXF Volunteer Passes are non-refundable.

What’s included in my AXF Camper Pass? All AXF Camper Passes include the following items -

  • a unique numbered AXF camping permit/sticker

  • two (2) nights camping

  • an AXF patch

  • an AXF Trail Map featuring local overland tracks, biking and hiking trails, river access points and more

  • access to live music, drinks and food concessions
